Your Question:

Can I still have a sense of dignity?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with the concept of dignity, especially in the face of adversity. But I believe that dignity is not something that we can define for ourselves, nor is it something that we can take away from others. Dignity is a fundamental aspect of human nature, inherent in our creation as image-bearers of God. It's not something that we can choose to possess or not possess, but rather it's a reflection of our inherent worth and value as human beings.

I think this is where the idea of autonomy can lead us astray. If we're solely responsible for defining our own dignity, then we're left with a fragile and fleeting sense of self-worth that can be easily shaken. But when we recognize that our dignity is rooted in our creation and our relationship with God, then we're able to find a sense of stability and security that transcends our circumstances. As the Bible says, "You are not your own; you were bought at a price" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We are not our own, but rather we are beloved children of God, created in His image and worthy of dignity and respect.

As a Christian, I believe that our dignity is not something that we can take away from others, but rather it's something that we can affirm and celebrate in one another. We're called to recognize the inherent worth and value of every human being, regardless of their circumstances or background. This is not just a moral imperative, but it's also a reflection of our own dignity as image-bearers of God. When we treat others with dignity and respect, we're not just doing them a favor, we're also affirming our own dignity and worth as human beings.
