Why did I have to lose my sense of taste?
The Temporary Nature of Taste
The temporary nature of taste is an inherent aspect of its definition. Tasting something means experiencing it in a real and personal way, which is not merely sipping or sampling it. This idea is reflected in the biblical concept of tasting, where it is emphasized that tasting implies experiencing something in a manner that is real and personal (Ps. 34:8). In the same way, our senses of taste and touch and smell give us the ability to understand and enjoy Gods creation, reflecting the fact that God himself understands and enjoys his creation, though in a far greater sense than we do.
The Role of Consumption in Taste
Consumption plays a crucial role in the experience of taste. As the Bible teaches, it is not the isolation of pleasure that is the issue, but rather the manner in which we consume it. Just as we cannot have knowledge of the taste of honey or its sweetness without undergoing the phenomenology of tasting it, so too we cannot truly experience the sweetness of Gods love without surrendering to it. The laws of consumption apply to everybody, as our bodies share a similar design when it comes to our senses of taste and touch. This means that we cannot truly experience the full range of flavors and textures without engaging in the act of consumption.
The Loss of Taste and Spiritual Hardness
Losing one's sense of taste can be a result of spiritual hardness, where one becomes desensitized to the sweetness of Gods love. This hardness can be caused by a lack of engagement with Gods creation, where one becomes numb to the beauty and wonder of the world. In the same way, our senses of taste and touch and smell can become dulled if we do not engage with them regularly. The Bible teaches that those who are lost are not lost because of a lack of information, but because of a hardness of heart. Therefore, we must not become complacent in our spiritual lives, but rather continue to engage with God and His creation, that we may experience the full range of flavors and textures of His love.
