Why Am I Still Awake at 2 Am?

The question of why we are still awake at 2 a.m. can be a frustrating and puzzling one, especially when we feel like we should be sleeping. However, as we reflect on the biblical account of Jesus' disciples falling asleep while He prayed, we are reminded that even in the midst of spiritual activities, we can still struggle with fatigue and lack of vigilance. In Mark 14:37-38, Jesus finds His disciples sleeping, despite their best intentions to stay awake and pray with Him. This incident highlights the challenge of staying alert and focused, even when we know we should be awake and engaged.

As we consider our own experiences of staying awake at 2 a.m., we may ask ourselves whether we are simply tired or whether there is a deeper issue at play. Are we conforming ourselves to the world and its temptations, rather than being vigilant and awake to the spiritual realities around us? The apostle Paul warns us in Romans 13:13-14 to "not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." By being awake and alert, we can seek God's guidance and wisdom, even in the midst of uncertainty and darkness.

In the stillness of the night, we have an opportunity to reflect on our priorities and values. What is shaping our desires and actions? Are we seeking to please God or to conform to the world? As we seek to stay awake and alert, we can ask God to give us wisdom and discernment, and to help us navigate the challenges and temptations of the day ahead. By being vigilant and awake, we can seek to please God and live a life that reflects His values and teachings. As the psalmist writes, "I will lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth" (Psalm 121:1-2). May we seek to be awake and alert, not just physically, but spiritually, that we may live a life that is pleasing to God.
