The Problem of Suffering: A Biblical Perspective

The question of why God allows suffering is a complex and deeply personal issue that has puzzled believers and non-believers alike for centuries. From a biblical perspective, the answer lies not in the absence of suffering, but in the presence of God's love and sovereignty. As the theologian Millard Erickson noted, "God himself became the victim of evil so that he and we might be victors over evil" (Erickson, 27). This means that our struggles and sufferings are not a sign of God's absence, but rather an opportunity for us to grow in faith and character.

The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering serves several purposes in our lives, according to the Bible. Firstly, it allows us to learn to hold God fast, as the Bible says, "The reason why the Bible spends so much time on the subject of suffering is to ensure that we shall learn to hold Him fast" (Ricucci, 124). Secondly, suffering gives us the opportunity to develop perseverance, the character of God, as the Bible says, "Hardships are intended to give us a spiritual makeover, to give us the character of God" (Ricucci, 124). Finally, suffering allows God to work grace into our lives, as the Bible says, "The gap of suffering allows God to work grace into his people" (Lewis, 203).

A Call to Trust and Obey

In the face of suffering, we are called to trust and obey God, even when we don't understand why. As the Bible says, "God, I don't know what you are doing, but you do, and that is enough" (Ricucci, 124). We must learn to see our struggles and sufferings as opportunities for growth and character development, rather than as a sign of God's absence or lack of love. As C.S. Lewis so eloquently put it, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world" (Lewis, 203). By trusting and obeying God in the midst of suffering, we can discover the deeper purposes of God and grow in our relationship with Him.
