Prioritizing Unity Over Division in a Turbulent World

As followers of Christ, we are called to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4:3). This unity is not something that happens automatically, but rather it requires intentional effort and a commitment to prioritize it above division. In a world filled with distractions and disruptions, it's easy to get caught up in our own agendas and let division creep in. However, as Christians, we are called to be directed persons, not driven persons (Matthew 22:37-40). This means that we must learn to prioritize our time and energy on what truly matters, rather than getting caught up in what is urgent but not necessarily important.

Three Steps to Prioritizing Unity

To prioritize unity over division, we must first set priorities. This involves intentionally directing our time and energy towards what is truly important, rather than getting caught up in what is urgent but not necessarily important. As the apostle Paul writes, "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things" (Philippians 4:8). By setting priorities, we can focus on what truly matters and avoid getting sidetracked by distractions. Second, we must examine our lives for inefficiency. This involves taking a hard look at our habits and patterns of behavior and asking ourselves if they are truly aligning with our priorities. Are there areas where we can cut back or eliminate activities that are not essential to our unity and purpose? Finally, we must start at the bottom and cut. This involves being willing to let go of things that are not essential to our unity and purpose, even if it's difficult or uncomfortable. By starting at the bottom and cutting, we can eliminate distractions and focus on what truly matters.

A Life of Unity and Purpose

As we prioritize unity over division, we will find that our lives become more focused, more intentional, and more purposeful. We will be able to face the challenges of a turbulent world with confidence and peace, knowing that we are united in the Spirit and committed to our priorities. As the apostle Paul writes, "I can do all this through him who gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13). By prioritizing unity over division, we can experience the strength and peace that comes from being directed by the Spirit, rather than being driven by our own agendas. May we strive to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, even in the midst of a turbulent world. May we be directed persons, not driven persons, and may we experience the peace and strength that comes from prioritizing unity over division.
