The Role of Prayer in Daily Devotions

Prayer is a spiritual discipline that we must diligently exercise. It is a means of communing with God and conforming ourselves to His will. As we pray, we should express a fundamental trust that God will indeed answer our prayer, in spite of our acknowledgment of sin. Prayer is not just about asking for things, but about learning to align our life with devotion. This kind of alignment is the high possibility behind the command to pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17).

Prayer as a Means of Discerning God's Will

Prayer can be a means of discerning God's will. We should pray for the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding (Colossians 1:9-10). This means being still and listening to God, and not being deterred from prayer just because we don't feel like we're getting answers. Prayer is not just about getting things done, but about cultivating a deepened willingness to do God's will. Jesus taught his disciples to pray for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). This means that our prayers should be focused on God's character and purposes, rather than just on our own desires.

Prayer as a Relationship with God

Prayer is not just about techniques or formulas, but about building a relationship with God. It's about talking with God, not just about getting things from God. When we pray, we should be seeking to align our life with God's will, and to cultivate a deepened willingness to do His will. This means being still and listening to God, and not being deterred from prayer just because we don't feel like we're getting answers. As we pray, we should be seeking to nourish the life of God in us, and to deepen our relationship with Him. This is the key to a stronger prayer life, and to reaching our dreams and overcoming obstacles in our life. (Psalm 138:8, 1 John 5:14-15)
