When our words have the power to uplift or tear down, it is crucial to prioritize unity over division. The Bible emphasizes the importance of unity in the body of Christ, urging us to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4:3). This unity is not just a feeling or a sentiment, but a reality that resides in the shared Spirit of the community (1 Cor. 12:13). To prioritize unity, we must emphasize those things that make for unity, rather than focusing on the things that divide us. This means choosing our words carefully, as words have the power to build up or tear down (Proverbs 15:4).

To achieve unity, we must recognize that our words are not equally weighted. Positives weigh more than negatives, and constructive criticism can be more effective than tearing down others. As the Bible says, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). When we choose to speak positively, we can create an environment where individuals feel safe to share their thoughts and opinions, leading to a more harmonious and productive community. On the other hand, when we focus on the negatives, we can create a culture of fear and division.

In order to prioritize unity over division, we must also recognize the importance of humility and listening. When we are quick to judge or criticize others, we can create a culture of defensiveness and division. Instead, we must be willing to listen to others, to hear their perspectives and to understand their needs. As the Bible says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" (Ephesians 4:29). By choosing our words carefully and prioritizing unity over division, we can create a more harmonious and productive community, where individuals feel valued and respected.
