The Problem of Evil

The question of why God allows bad things to happen to innocent people is a complex and difficult one. It is a problem that has puzzled philosophers and theologians for centuries. The question seems to be straightforward, but it is not as simple as it appears. The Bible teaches that sin is the cause of suffering and death (Romans 5:12, 6:23). When humans sin, they bring spiritual consequences upon themselves, including death and separation from God. However, this does not fully explain why God allows natural disasters, cancer, and other forms of suffering to occur.

Human Sin and the Problem of Evil

One reason why God allows bad things to happen is because of the wrong decisions and actions of humans. The Bible teaches that suffering arises, in part, from human disobedience and sin (Genesis 3, Romans 5:12). This is evident in the fact that many forms of suffering, such as wars, famines, and natural disasters, are often the result of human actions. Furthermore, the Bible teaches that God is always fair and does not condemn the innocent and the ignorant (Psalm 92:15, Romans 1:20). However, this does not mean that God is not aware of the suffering of the innocent. Rather, it means that God is working for the good of those who love Him, even in the midst of suffering (Romans 8:28).

The Sovereignty of God

The sovereignty of God is another aspect of the problem of evil. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, including the actions of humans (Psalm 115:3, Romans 9:20-21). This means that God is not limited by human actions and can bring good out of evil. The Bible teaches that God can take the evil actions of humans and use them for His own purposes (Genesis 50:20, Romans 8:28). This does not mean that God is the author of evil, but rather that He can bring good out of evil. Ultimately, the problem of evil is a mystery that we may not fully understand, but it is a mystery that is not inconsistent with the sovereignty of God.
