The Bible teaches that forgiveness is a divine prerogative, and it is the responsibility of God alone to forgive sins committed against Him (Stott, BC, 29). However, when it comes to human relationships, forgiveness is a moral obligation that we are called to extend to one another. The Bible emphasizes the importance of forgiveness, not only because it is a reflection of God's character, but also because it is essential for maintaining healthy relationships and for our own spiritual well-being.

The Bible provides several principles for understanding forgiveness. First, forgiveness does not mean forgetting what has happened, but rather it involves not holding a person's sin against them (Lk 17:3-4). Second, forgiveness is not dependent on the actions of the offender, but rather it is a decision we make to release them from the debt they owe us (Mt 6:14-15). Third, forgiveness requires repentance on the part of the offender, and it is not a one-time event, but rather a continuous process (Acts 2:37-38; 11:18). Fourth, forgiveness is not a human work, but rather it is a gift from God that is made possible through the cross of Christ (Eph 1:7; 1 Cor 15:3).

The Bible also emphasizes the importance of extending forgiveness to others, just as God has forgiven us (Col 3:13; Eph 4:32). Jesus taught that we are to forgive others "seventy times seven" (Mt 18:21-22), and he illustrated the importance of forgiveness through the parable of the unforgiving debtor (Lk 17:34).
