The Biblical Teaching on Forgiveness

The Bible teaches that forgiveness is a fundamental aspect of Christian living. According to the Bible, forgiveness is not only a moral virtue but also a spiritual necessity. The Bible teaches that forgiveness is a prerogative of God alone (Stott, BC, 29). This means that only God can forgive sins committed against Him. However, when it comes to forgiving others, the Bible teaches that we are to forgive them as God forgives us (Col. 3:13; Eph. 1:7; 1 Cor. 15:3; Matt. 6:12).

Conditions for Forgiveness

The Bible teaches that forgiveness is not unconditional. Repentance is required for forgiveness to occur. This means that the offender must acknowledge their sin and seek forgiveness before we can forgive them (Lk 17:3-4). If the offender does not repent, forgiveness is not possible. The Bible also teaches that forgiveness is not dependent on the actions of the offender. Instead, forgiveness is a gift that comes from God's grace (Eph. 1:7). However, this does not mean that we should not hold others accountable for their actions. The Bible teaches that we are to forgive others as God forgives us, but this does not mean that we should ignore the consequences of their actions.
