The Dilemma of Affordability

The question of affordability is a pressing concern for many people, especially when it comes to meeting basic needs such as eating and paying bills. The Bible teaches that we should not worry about material things, but rather focus on spiritual nourishment (Matthew 6:25-34). Jesus says, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" (Matthew 6:25). This passage encourages us to prioritize our spiritual well-being over our physical needs.

However, the reality is that many people struggle to afford basic necessities, let alone luxuries. The Bible teaches that God provides for our needs, but we must also take responsibility for our financial decisions. Proverbs 22:7 says, "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." This passage highlights the importance of financial stewardship and avoiding debt. We must learn to manage our finances wisely, prioritize our spending, and give generously to those in need.

In order to address the question of affordability, we must first recognize that our perceptions of what we need are often skewed. We may think we can't afford to eat or pay bills, but this may be a result of our own financial decisions and priorities. As Jesus said, "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?" (Isaiah 55:2). We must learn to re-evaluate our priorities and focus on what truly brings satisfaction and fulfillment. By doing so, we can break free from the cycle of debt and financial stress, and experience the freedom and peace that comes from living within our means.
