Understanding Chronic Illness from a Biblical Perspective

When faced with a chronic illness, it's natural to wonder if we still have a sense of control over our lives. The Bible teaches us that even in the midst of suffering, we can still grow in our knowledge of Christ and find joy in our circumstances (Rom. 8:28). However, addictions are a different matter, as they are incompatible with spiritual growth and can be seen as a result of the fall, not just a natural condition.

The Disease Model vs. Sinful Desires

The disease model of addiction can be helpful in understanding the complexities of chronic illness, but it's essential to recognize that it doesn't always fit the data. The Bible teaches us that we are responsible for our sinful desires, even when they seem to be controlling us. Saying no to sinful desires, even when it hurts, is an essential feature of spiritual growth. This doesn't mean that we can simply will ourselves to be healthy or that we don't need to rely on God or others for help. Rather, it means that we acknowledge our responsibility to choose differently, even when it's hard.

Finding Control in Chronic Illness

While chronic illness may take away some sense of physical control, it's not a reason to give up on spiritual growth. In fact, the Bible encourages us to rely on God and find joy in our circumstances, even when they're difficult (Ps. 119:67). By choosing to trust in God and seek His healing, we can find a sense of control and purpose, even in the midst of chronic illness. This doesn't mean that we won't face challenges or difficulties, but it means that we can approach them with faith and confidence, knowing that God is sovereign over all things. As we seek to live out our faith in the midst of chronic illness, we can find a sense of control and purpose that goes beyond our physical limitations.
