Understanding Rest in the Lord

Resting in the Lord is not just a feeling, but a choice. It's a decision to trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, even when we're feeling overwhelmed. Psalm 37:7 says, "Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him. Do not fret—it only causes harm." This means that we need to learn to entrust our problems to the Lord and leave them in His hands. We can't control everything, and trying to do so will only lead to frustration and exhaustion.

Finding Rest in the Lord

So, how do we find rest in the Lord when we're feeling overwhelmed? First, we need to acknowledge that rest is essential to our spiritual journey. We can't keep going without it. Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). This means that we need to come to Jesus, not just intellectually, but practically. We need to learn to slow down and make space for God to transform us. This may mean setting aside time for prayer, reading the Bible, and seeking community with other believers. We also need to be intentional about our spiritual disciplines, such as meditation and worship.

Experiencing Rest in the Lord

Resting in the Lord is not just about feeling calm or peaceful, but about trusting in God's goodness and sovereignty. When we're feeling overwhelmed, we need to remind ourselves that God is our Source of power and that He is working everything out for our good (Romans 8:28). We can say with Job, "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised" (Job 1:21). This means that we need to learn to worship God, even in the midst of our struggles. We need to trust that God is working, even when we can't see it. And we need to be patient, waiting on the Lord to bring about a change. As Isaiah says, "Do not fret—it only causes harm" (Psalm 37:7). Instead, let's choose to rest in the Lord, trusting in His goodness and sovereignty. Divine rest is available to us, and it's a choice we can make every day. We can choose to rest in the Lord, even when we're feeling overwhelmed. When we do, we'll experience the peace and joy that comes from trusting in God's goodness and sovereignty.
