Why Does God Allow Pain?

Introduction

The question of why God allows pain and suffering to exist in this world is a complex and challenging one. It is a problem that has puzzled philosophers, theologians, and everyday people for centuries. From an evangelical Christian perspective, the Bible teaches us that God is a loving and all-powerful God who desires that there should be no physical pain in his creation. However, in particular instances, he decides not to realize this desire by a special act of his own.

The Problem of Pain

The problem of pain is a difficult one to understand. It is a signal that something is wrong, and it can become a considerable evil under certain circumstances. God could have created his world in such a way that evil intentions or evil results would not occur, or he could have intervened to prevent them. However, he chooses not to, and this leads to questions about his character. The Bible teaches us that pain and suffering are a result of sin, and that God uses them to draw us closer to him. In his book, "The Problem of Pain," C.S. Lewis writes, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."

The Purpose of Pain

From a biblical perspective, the purpose of pain is not to punish us for our sins, but to bring us closer to God. When we experience pain and suffering, we are forced to confront our own sinfulness and to turn to God for help. This is what happened to the apostle Paul, who wrote, "I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body" (Philippians 1:23-24). Paul's desire was to be with Christ, but he knew that it was more necessary for the church that he remain in the body and continue to serve them. This is a powerful example of how God uses pain and suffering to bring us closer to him and to accomplish his purposes in our lives. Ultimately, God's plan is to eliminate pain and suffering from this world, and until then, Christians are to turn to him for comfort and guidance.
