Why Does God Allow Suffering in My Family?

The question of why God allows suffering in our families is a question that has puzzled many people for centuries. On the surface, it seems that God is distant and uncaring, allowing pain and suffering to continue without any clear reason. However, as we delve deeper into the Bible, we find that God's reasons for allowing suffering are multifaceted and complex. One reason is that God uses suffering to bring us closer to Himself. As the Bible says, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world" (C. S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain). In other words, God uses suffering to get our attention and to draw us closer to Himself.

Another reason why God allows suffering is that it is a result of living in a sinful, fallen world. As the Bible says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This verse reminds us that God is sovereign over all things, including suffering, and that He can use even the most difficult circumstances for our good. In fact, the Bible says that suffering can be a means of spiritual growth and maturity, as we are conformed to the likeness of Christ (Romans 8:29). This is a difficult concept to grasp, but it is one that is rooted in the Bible's teaching on the sovereignty of God.

In the midst of suffering, it can be difficult to see how it could be good. But as we trust in God and His sovereignty, we can begin to see that even our suffering can be used for our good. As the Bible says, "God does not let us suffer because he doesn't love us. He meets us in our suffering and promises to bring us through it" (Jesus). In fact, Jesus Himself underwent incomprehensible suffering for us, and He promises to be with us in our suffering. As we trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, we can begin to see that even our suffering can be used for our good, and that God is always working to bring us closer to Himself.
