Your Question:

Why does God let me suffer when I've been a good person?

Answer:

My friend, I've been in the shoes of pastoral care for many years, and I've seen firsthand the struggles that come with suffering. As a man of faith, I've grappled with this very question - why does God let us suffer when we've been good people? The answer is not as simple as saying that suffering is for our own improvement, although that may be a part of it. Rather, it's that God sees that the suffering can somehow be turned to our own good.

Think of it like this - sometimes we're not able to make the decision to accept suffering, whether it's due to circumstances or our own limitations. But even if we were able to make that decision, God still permits us to suffer so that we can gain intellectual mastery over certain events, and ultimately, so that we can know and trust Him more deeply. It's a mystery, but one that's rooted in God's perfect love and goodness.

As I've counseled many people through suffering, I've come to see that it's not about God causing the suffering, but rather about Him being gracious and loving enough to make it count. He will use our suffering for our good, to refine us and make us more like Him. And in the end, the weight of glory that we receive in heaven is far greater than any suffering we may endure on earth. As the Bible says, "And the weight of glory is so great that it is beyond comparison with the suffering." (2 Corinthians 4:17)
