The Question of God's Sovereignty

When we face difficult circumstances, it's natural to question why God allowed it to happen. This question is especially pertinent when it comes to our businesses or careers. In the passage from the book of Job, we see a man who is struggling to understand why God has allowed him to experience such suffering. Similarly, Dr. Jerry Falwell recounts a time when he made some poor financial decisions that put his ministry at risk. He could have asked God why He allowed him to make those mistakes, but instead, he chose to reframe the question and look at his own role in the situation.

Personal Responsibility and God's Sovereignty

When we experience setbacks or failures in our businesses or careers, it's essential to recognize that God is sovereign over all creation. This means that He is in control of every event, including the ones that seem to be beyond our control. However, this does not mean that we are absolved of personal responsibility. We must acknowledge that our actions (or lack thereof) can contribute to the circumstances we face. In the story of Dr. Falwell, he admits that he was "ignorant of big business procedures" and made some poor decisions that put his ministry at risk. This shows that even when we are facing difficult circumstances, we must take ownership of our actions and seek to learn from them.

Trust and Obedience

So, why did God let this happen to my business? The answer lies not in trying to understand God's motivations or reasons for allowing a particular event to occur, but rather in trusting and obeying Him in the midst of uncertainty. When we face difficulties, we can choose to grumble and complain, or we can seek to understand God's purpose in the midst of our struggles. As the book of Job reminds us, "In all this Job did not sin, nor charge God with wrong." This means that even in the midst of great suffering, Job chose to trust and obey God, rather than questioning His sovereignty. Similarly, we can choose to trust and obey God, even when we don't understand why He has allowed a particular event to occur. This is not to say that we will always have the answers or that we will never experience setbacks. However, by choosing to trust and obey God, we can experience a deeper level of faith and understanding, even in the midst of uncertainty.
