Understanding God's Sovereignty in Times of Suffering

It's not easy to understand why God takes away our ability to enjoy life, especially when we feel like we're living a life of purpose and meaning. The Bible teaches that God's sovereignty is not limited to just granting us an area of autonomy, but also in deciding who should have the gift of enjoyment and who should not. As the prophet Isaiah says, "The joy of the Lord is your strength" (Isaiah 41:10), and this joy is not just a human choice, but a sovereign gift of God's grace. It's possible that our desire to enjoy life arises out of our autonomy, but ultimately, it's God's decision to grant us this gift.

The Purpose of Suffering

Sometimes, we may wonder why God allows us to experience suffering, especially when it seems to take away our ability to enjoy life. However, the Bible teaches that suffering can be a means of spiritual growth and character development. As the apostle Paul says, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). Suffering can encourage us to lean on God and seek His presence, which can bring us joy and satisfaction in the midst of difficulties.

Finding Joy in God's Presence

Ultimately, the ability to enjoy life is not just about our circumstances or our feelings, but about our relationship with God. As the Bible says, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4). When we seek to delight in God's presence, we can find joy and satisfaction, even in the midst of suffering. This is because God is now made visible in and through the person of Jesus, who lives in us through the Spirit. As we seek to love and follow God, we can find joy in the Spirit working within us, and God's splendor can ascend over the sorrow of life. Joy is possible, and it's something we can choose to become an expert in.
