But true humility keeps us grounded and focused on what's truly important. As the Bible says, "In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity" (emphasis mine). This means that we prioritize unity and love over our own achievements and accomplishments. I've seen this play out in my own life and in the lives of those around me. When we're too proud of our accomplishments, we can start to think that we're the ones who deserve the credit, rather than recognizing that it's all about God's work in us. This can lead to a false sense of self-importance and a lack of humility. But when we recognize that our successes are not about us, but about God's work in us, we're able to stay humble and focused on what's truly important. As a baseball fan, I've seen many players who have achieved great success, but have lost sight of what's truly important. They become arrogant and prideful, and it ultimately leads to their downfall. But when they stay humble and focused on the game, they're able to achieve even greater success and stay grounded in the process. This is what I try to teach my congregation and my family: that humility is not about denying our strengths and abilities, but about recognizing that they come from God and staying focused on what's truly important.
