The Nature of Freedom

Freedom is a complex and multifaceted concept that has been debated by philosophers and theologians for centuries. From a compatibilist perspective, freedom is not coercion but persuasion, and it is compatible with God's sovereignty. This view suggests that true freedom is found in subjection to God and His truth, and that the more we submit to God's will, the more free we become. In contrast, libertarian freedom emphasizes the ability to choose between action A or not-A in the same circumstances, and argues that freedom requires the ability to choose differently and to desire to choose differently.

Defining Freedom

Scripture defines freedom as choosing the one particular thing that is commanded by God and refusing the contrary (Deuteronomy 30:19). Ultimately, freedom is not about doing whatever we want, but about living in accordance with God's will, and experiencing the joy and peace that comes from submitting to Him.
