The Dilemma of Safety and Freedom

The question of how to choose between safety and freedom is a complex one. On one hand, safety provides a sense of security and protection from harm. We often pray for safety in various aspects of our lives, such as when traveling by plane, driving a car, or walking down the street. God promises to give His angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways (Psalm 91:11-12). On the other hand, freedom allows us to make choices and live our lives as we see fit. However, this freedom can sometimes lead to harm or danger.

The Biblical Perspective on Freedom

The Bible defines freedom as choosing the one particular thing that is commanded by God and refusing the contrary (Deuteronomy 30:19). This means that true freedom is not just the ability to make choices, but also the ability to choose what is right and good in God's eyes. Freedom is not just a general concept, but a specific spiritual and moral one, freedom from sin and freedom to live as God intended human beings to live. As the Bible says, "For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7). This means that we should not let fear or a desire for safety dictate our choices, but rather we should choose to live boldly and freely, trusting in God's protection and guidance.

Choosing Between Safety and Freedom

So, how do we choose between safety and freedom? The answer is not a simple one, but it is rooted in our faith in God. We must trust that God is sovereign and in control, and that He will protect us even when we take risks and make choices that may seem uncertain or scary. We must also trust that God's will for us is good, and that He wants us to live freely and boldly, even if it means facing challenges and difficulties. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). By choosing to trust in God and His goodness, we can find a balance between safety and freedom, and live our lives with courage, confidence, and faith.
