The Question: "Why Me?"

As we reflect on the question "Why me?" we must consider the context and motivations behind it. The question often arises from a sense of inadequacy, wondering why we have been blessed with so much while others have so little. This can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and even resentment. However, it's essential to recognize that our blessings are not a result of our own merit, but rather a gift from God. As the Bible reminds us, "Behold, you have made my days as a handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: verily, every man at his best state is altogether vanity" (Psalm 39:5).

In this context, the question "Why me?" can be seen as a form of idolatry, where we focus on our own blessings and forget the sovereignty of God. We begin to think that our possessions, talents, and experiences are the result of our own efforts, rather than God's gracious provision. This can lead to a self-centered and prideful attitude, where we become more concerned with our own desires than with serving others and glorifying God. As Jesus taught, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). If our hearts are focused on our own blessings, we will become like the rich young ruler who walked away from Jesus, unable to let go of his possessions (Mark 10:17-22).

The answer to the question "Why me?" is not about us, but about God's sovereignty and love. We are not worthy of God's blessings, but He chooses to bless us because of His mercy and grace. As we come to understand this, we can begin to live a life that reflects God's character, using our blessings to serve others and bring glory to Him. This is the essence of the Christian life, where we learn to say "yes" to God and yield to His will. As the apostle Paul wrote, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). Our worth and identity are not found in our blessings, but in our relationship with Christ, who loves us and accepts us as we are. By embracing this truth, we can overcome the question "Why me?" and live a life that honors God and serves others.
