Finding meaning in life beyond work is a common concern for many individuals, particularly when they are no longer able to work due to illness, injury, or other circumstances. This concern is often rooted in the idea that one's identity and purpose are closely tied to their career. However, as the Bible teaches, our worth and value come from being created in God's image and from having a personal relationship with Him (Genesis 1:27, Psalm 139:13-14).

God's Sovereignty and Our Identity

The Bible reminds us that God is sovereign over all creation, including our lives and circumstances (Psalm 103:19, Romans 11:36). When we lose our job or are no longer able to work, it may be an indication that we are in the wrong place at the wrong time for the wrong reason (1 Corinthians 13:2). This does not mean that our lives are meaningless, but rather that we may be being redirected to a new path or purpose. As the apostle Paul wrote, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10). We are to seek to understand God's will and purpose for our lives, and to live out our faith in practical ways (Matthew 22:37-40). As we seek to understand and follow God's will, we will find that our lives take on a new sense of purpose and meaning. We will be able to see that our worth and value come from being created in God's image, and that our lives are not defined by our career or accomplishments, but by our relationship with God.
