The Nature of Faith and Feelings

When we experience feelings of distance or absence from God, it's essential to distinguish between faith and feelings. Faith is not based on emotions, but on the trust we have in God's character and promises as revealed in Scripture. In 1 Peter 1:8, the Bible says, "Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory." This verse highlights the difference between seeing God with our eyes and believing in Him with our hearts. We may not feel God's presence, but our faith is grounded in His promises, which are eternal and unchanging.

God's Sovereignty and Presence

The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, and His presence is not limited by our feelings or experiences. In Psalm 139:7-12, David writes, "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast." This passage assures us that God is always present, even when we don't feel it. His sovereignty extends beyond our emotions and experiences, and He is always working to guide and sustain us.

The Importance of Biblical Perspective

In times of spiritual drought or feeling distant from God, it's crucial to maintain a biblical perspective. We must not allow our feelings to dictate our understanding of God's presence. Instead, we should anchor ourselves in Scripture, remembering God's character and promises. As the Psalmist says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path" (Psalm 119:105). By fixing our eyes on God's Word, we can maintain our faith and trust in His presence, even when we don't feel it. This is not a denial of our emotions but a recognition that our faith is grounded in something greater than our feelings – the unchanging and sovereign God who is always present.
