The Dignity of Dependence

As a Christian, I want to emphasize that our dignity is not derived from our independence, but from our dependence on God. The Bible teaches us that we are not self-sufficient, but rather, we are dependent on God for everything (Psalm 104:24, Acts 17:28). Our dignity is not based on our ability to do things on our own, but on our relationship with God, who is the ultimate source of our worth and value. When we acknowledge our dependence on God, we can let go of the need to control and manipulate others to get what we want.

The Dangers of Self-Dependent Relationships

The Bible warns us against self-dependent relationships, where we try to get what we want from others without giving back or showing appreciation. This can lead to a sense of entitlement and a lack of respect for others (Philippians 2:3-5). When we try to use others to get what we want, we are not treating them with dignity and respect. Instead, we should focus on building relationships based on mutual love, respect, and service (Galatians 5:13-14). This means being willing to listen, to give, and to serve others, even when it's hard.

Embracing Our Dependence on God

So, how can we keep our dignity when we're dependent on others? The answer is not to try to be independent, but to recognize our dependence on God and on others. When we acknowledge our need for others, we can begin to build relationships based on mutual love and respect. We can also recognize that our dignity is not based on our ability to do things on our own, but on our relationship with God. By embracing our dependence on God and on others, we can cultivate a sense of humility and a willingness to serve and give to others, rather than trying to use them to get what we want. This is the key to maintaining our dignity, even when we're dependent on others.
