The Illusion of Security

It's natural to feel a sense of security in our homes, but the reality is that no house is truly safe from the uncertainties of life. We may have accounts that are immune to losses, but our houses are not impervious to natural disasters or other forms of destruction. As the Bible says, "You'll never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul" (Proverbs 15:24). This verse reminds us that even with all our wealth and possessions, we are not immune to the inevitability of death and loss.

The Sovereignty of God

But why do we lose our homes, even when we feel secure? The answer lies in the sovereignty of God. He is the one who brings accidents, diseases, evil, and violence into our lives, and He is the one who can also bring destruction to our homes. As the psalmist says, "Few places are completely safe anymore, including your own home" (Psalm 91:5-6). This is not to say that God is the cause of our troubles, but rather that He is the one who brings all things into existence, including the uncertainties of life.

The Importance of Humility

So what can we learn from the experience of losing a home? One important lesson is the importance of humility. When we feel secure in our homes, we can become complacent and forget that we are not in control. But when we lose our homes, we are reminded of our dependence on God and the uncertainties of life. As the Bible says, "My house shall be called a house of prayer" (Isaiah 56:7). This verse reminds us that our homes are not our own, but rather a place where we can come to pray and seek God's guidance and protection. By acknowledging our dependence on God and seeking His guidance, we can learn to live with a sense of humility and trust in His sovereignty.
