Understanding God-Ordained Leadership

Before we delve into the question of how to know if we're being called to leadership, let's clarify what it means to be a leader in the context of the Bible. Leadership is not about superiority or personal brilliance, but rather about serving others and following God's guidance. In the Bible, leadership is often associated with positions of authority, but it's not about lording it over others (Matthew 20:25-26). Rather, leaders are called to be servants, following the example of Jesus (1 Peter 5:1-5). This means that leadership is not about personal power or prestige, but about serving others and following God's will.

Recognizing the Call to Leadership

So, how do we know if we're being called to leadership? The Bible emphasizes the importance of recognizing and responding to God's guidance in our lives. In Acts 13:1-7, the church set aside special periods to seek divine leadership for ministry, and God called two of their overseers to lead. Similarly, in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, the church appointed elders to lead, and these leaders were expected to demonstrate certain qualities, such as integrity, humility, and a servant-hearted attitude. When we're considering a call to leadership, we should ask ourselves if we're demonstrating these qualities in our lives, and if we're willing to submit to God's guidance and follow His will.

Preparation for Leadership

God often prepares us for leadership by giving us experiences and opportunities that help us develop the necessary skills and character. In the story of Joseph, for example, God prepared him for leadership by giving him wisdom and integrity in the face of adversity (Genesis 39-41). Similarly, God may be preparing you for leadership by giving you experiences that help you develop the necessary qualities, such as patience, humility, and a servant-hearted attitude. As you reflect on your life and experiences, ask yourself if you're seeing God's hand at work, guiding and preparing you for a leadership role. If so, be open to His call and follow His guidance.
