The Dilemma of Selfishness

The concept of selfishness is complex and multifaceted. On one hand, we are encouraged to prioritize our own needs and well-being, especially when it comes to our physical and emotional health. As the Bible says, "You cannot pour from an empty cup" (Matthew 10:42). This means that taking care of ourselves is not selfish, but rather a necessary investment in our ability to serve and love others. In fact, Jesus taught that we should love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31), implying that our own well-being is essential to our ability to love and serve others.

On the other hand, selfishness can also be a destructive force that prioritizes our own desires above the needs of others. This is the kind of selfishness that Scripture warns against, saying "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves" (Philippians 2:3). When we prioritize our own desires above the needs of others, we can become consumed by greed, envy, and a desire for power and control. This kind of selfishness can lead to harm and destruction, not only for others, but also for ourselves.

So, is it selfish to want to prioritize our own needs for once? The answer is not a simple yes or no. Rather, it depends on our motivations and intentions. If we prioritize our own needs in order to serve and love others more effectively, then that is not selfish. However, if we prioritize our own needs above the needs of others, then that is a form of selfishness that can lead to harm and destruction. As we seek to navigate this complex issue, let us remember the words of Jesus, who said "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it" (Mark 8:35). May we prioritize our own needs in a way that serves and honors God, and may we always seek to put the needs of others before our own.
