The Problem of Suffering

The question of why God allows us to suffer when we're doing the right thing and still get hurt is a complex and deeply personal issue. Many people struggle to understand why a loving God would permit suffering, especially when it seems unjust or unfair. However, the Bible teaches us that suffering is not a punishment from God, but rather a result of living in a sinful, fallen world (Rom. 8:22-23). Sometimes, God allows suffering to discipline us and bring us closer to Him (Heb. 12:10-11). In all cases, we can trust that God has a plan to bring good out of our suffering, even if we don't understand it.

The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering can be a teacher, teaching us to fix our eyes on Jesus and trust Him in the midst of pain (Heb. 5:8). When we focus on God's sovereignty and goodness, we can begin to see that suffering is not an obstacle to our relationship with Him, but rather an opportunity to deepen our trust and dependence on Him. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." Suffering can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and maturity, helping us to develop a stronger faith and a deeper understanding of God's character.

Trust in God's Goodness

Ultimately, the question of why God allows us to suffer is not about understanding God's reasons, but about trusting His goodness and sovereignty. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Rom. 8:28). We don't have to understand God's reasons for allowing suffering, but we can trust that He is working everything out for our good. By fixing our eyes on Jesus and trusting Him in the midst of pain, we can find hope and peace, even in the midst of suffering. As one person said, "God, I don't know what you are doing, but you do, and that is enough." We can trust that God is good, even when we don't understand why He allows us to suffer.
