Why did I have to lose my retirement savings?
The Illusion of Security through Wealth
The idea that our retirement savings can provide us with security is an illusion. As Christians, we are reminded that true security comes from God, not from our possessions or wealth. The Bible teaches us that "never will I leave you, never will I forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6). This promise of God's presence and provision is what gives us true stability and peace, not our retirement portfolios or savings accounts. We are susceptible to the lie that what we own has lasting value, but the truth is that nothing we accumulate or own can guarantee us true security.
The Folly of Trusting in Wealth
Trusting in wealth and material possessions to provide us with security is folly. The Bible warns us that "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). If we are storing up our treasures on earth, our hearts will be focused on the things of this world, rather than on God. We are called to be content with what we have, rather than constantly striving for more. This is not to say that we should not plan for the future or provide for our needs, but rather that we should not put our trust in the things of this world to provide us with security. As the Bible says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal" (Matthew 6:19).
The Sovereignty of God
Ultimately, the sovereignty of God is what gives us true security. We cannot control the future or insulate ourselves from all possible risks, but God is in control of all things. He has promised to be with us always and to provide for our needs. We are called to trust in Him, rather than in our own abilities or possessions. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). We can trust in God's goodness and provision, even when we face financial difficulties or uncertainties. He is our Rock and our Savior, and He will never leave us or forsake us.
