The False Promise of Financial Security

The loss of life savings can be a devastating experience, and it's natural to wonder if one can ever recover from it. However, the Bible teaches us that true stability and security come from a personal relationship with God, not from our possessions or financial portfolios. Jesus' statement, "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it" (Mark 8:35), highlights the false promise of financial security. The motivation for keeping our lives free from the love of money and being content with what we have is that God has said, "Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6).

The Folly of Putting Up Financial Security for Others

The Bible warns us against putting up financial security for others, but it also cautions us against not facing up to the resulting crisis. The goal is to save ourselves from the emptiness and futility of life. In the parable of the rich fool, Jesus teaches us that the things we accumulate and own do not provide us with any security (Luke 12:13-21). There are no retirement accounts or financial portfolios that can guarantee true stability amid the chaos of life. Instead, we need to see the foolishness and emptiness of such goals and redirect our focus towards a personal relationship with God.

The Investment in Yourself, Your Health, and Your Future

The loss of life savings can be a wake-up call to re-evaluate our priorities and invest in what truly matters – our relationship with God and our well-being. It's not selfish to prioritize our health and future; in fact, it's selfish not to do so. We need to pray for God to show us what steps to take and then enable us to take those steps. The Bible teaches us that God is our rock, our refuge, and our source of strength (Psalm 18:2). By putting our trust in Him, we can find true security and stability, even in the midst of financial crisis. As the Bible says, "My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
