The Slowness of God: Understanding His Patience and Forbearance

When we cry out to God for help, it can seem like He is taking an eternity to respond. We may feel frustrated, anxious, or even hopeless as we wait for an answer. But why does God seem so slow? Is He not listening or is He simply not interested? The Bible teaches us that God is not slow in keeping His promises, but rather, He is patient with us, not wanting any to perish but for all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). His slowness is not a sign of His lack of interest, but rather, a demonstration of His perseverance and forbearance with His people.

The Purpose of God's Slowness

God's slowness is not about making us jump through unnecessary hoops or testing our endurance. Rather, it is about giving us an opportunity to take advantage of the grace given in Christ. When we are faced with trials and challenges, we are tempted to become arrogant and self-sufficient. But God's slowness is a reminder that we need Him, and that our strength comes from Him alone. As we wait for God to answer our prayers, we are given the opportunity to deepen our relationship with Him, to trust in His goodness and sovereignty, and to learn to listen to His voice above the noise of our circumstances.

The Call to Patience and Prayer

So what should we do while we wait for God to answer? We should be patient and pray. Waiting can be a good test to ensure that God is in the venture. Sometimes, a future day will give us clearer insight than we have today. So, we should pray and trust in God's goodness, even when we don't see immediate results. We should also learn to listen to God's voice, to trust in His promises, and to give thanks in all circumstances. As we wait, let us remember that God is not slow, but rather, He is patient with us, and His slowness is a demonstration of His love and desire to save us. Let us wait with hope and trust, knowing that God is working all things together for our good. (Romans 8:28)
