Is it selfish to want to die and be free from this pain? This question may seem straightforward, but it requires a nuanced exploration of the concept of selfishness and the nature of suffering. On one hand, the desire to escape suffering can be seen as a natural human impulse, driven by a desire for comfort and relief. However, this impulse can also be seen as selfish, as it prioritizes one's own needs and desires above all else.

The Christian Perspective on Suffering

From a Christian perspective, suffering is not necessarily a result of selfishness, but rather a natural consequence of living in a fallen world. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, and that He allows suffering to occur for a variety of reasons, including to mature us and to bring us closer to Him (Rom. 5:3-5). While it is natural to want to escape suffering, the Christian way is to endure it with faith and trust in God's goodness and sovereignty. As the Bible says, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Rom. 5:3-4).

The Dangers of Selfishness

The desire to escape suffering can lead to a form of selfishness that is detrimental to our well-being and our relationships with others. When we prioritize our own needs and desires above all else, we can become isolated and disconnected from others, leading to feelings of loneliness and despair. In contrast, the Christian way is to put the needs of others before our own, to love and serve others, even in the midst of suffering. As Jesus says, "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it" (Luke 9:24). By putting others before ourselves, we can find true freedom and fulfillment, even in the midst of suffering. Ultimately, the Christian perspective on suffering is not that it is selfish to want to die and be free from pain, but rather that it is selfish to prioritize our own needs and desires above all else, and that true freedom and fulfillment come from putting others before ourselves.
