Understanding the Purpose of Prayer

Prayer is not primarily about getting answers from God, but about having perfect and complete oneness with Him. If we pray only because we want answers, we will become irritated and angry with God when those answers don't come. The Bible teaches us that we receive an answer every time we pray, but it's not always the answer we want or expect (Romans 8:26, James 4:3). Sometimes, we don't get our answers to prayer because we don't always know how to pray as we ought, or because we don't always pray according to God's will.

God's Sovereignty and Prayer

God's sovereignty is not a reason for prayer to be futile. In fact, God's sovereignty is what makes prayer possible. We can have great confidence that God will answer our prayer when we ask him for something that accords with a specific promise or command of Scripture. However, when we don't receive the answer we want, it's not because God is unwilling or indifferent, but because He has a different plan or purpose in mind. We may not always understand why God answers our prayers the way He does, but we can trust that He is always listening and always answers our prayers, even if sometimes the answer is no or wait.

Prayer and Faith

Prayer is not a means of manipulating God into doing what we want, but a way of expressing our faith and trust in Him. We should pray believing that He will answer, but also be willing to accept His answer, even if it's not what we wanted. The Bible teaches us that God rewards our faith in His righteous judgments (1 Thessalonians 5:17). We should pray without ceasing, not because we're trying to get God to do something, but because we want to have a deeper relationship with Him. When we pray, we're not just asking for things, we're seeking to have a deeper understanding of God's will and to be conformed to His image. Ultimately, prayer is about having a personal relationship with God, and that relationship is built on faith, trust, and obedience.
