Understanding Suffering from a Biblical Perspective

When we experience suffering, it can be challenging to understand why God allows it, especially when we feel like we're doing the right thing. However, the Bible teaches us that suffering is a result of living in a sinful, fallen world. Sometimes, it's because God is disciplining us for our good (Hebrews 12:10-11), but in all cases, we're assured by Romans 8:28 that God works all things together for our good. This doesn't mean that we'll always understand why we're suffering, but it means that we can trust that God has a plan to bring us through it.

The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering can be a teacher, teaching us to rely on God and trust Him in the midst of pain. As we fix our eyes on Jesus, we can learn from our suffering and become more like Him (Hebrews 5:8). However, if we avoid Him in the midst of pain, we can become embittered by it. God desires to take away the pain, but sometimes He chooses not to, allowing us to experience the consequences of our sin or the fallen world around us. In these instances, He may be using our suffering to teach us to trust and obey Him, even when we feel powerless.

The Sovereignty of God

God is sovereign over all creation, and He has a plan to eliminate pain and suffering from this world. Until then, Christians are to turn to Him and trust that He has a reason for allowing suffering, even if we don't understand it. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." We can trust that God's reasons for allowing suffering are for our ultimate good, even if we don't see it in the midst of our pain. This is a hope-filled answer, one that reminds us that our relationship with God is the most important thing, and that finding Him in our suffering is the point.
