The Problem of Lying

Lying is a problem because it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6), emphasizing that there is nothing false in him. When we lie, we speak according to our own nature, for we are influenced by the father of lies, Satan (John 8:44). This is not just a matter of human nature, but rather a spiritual reality that reflects the character of Satan and his influence over humanity.

The Consequences of Lying

Lying has severe consequences that affect not only individuals but also society as a whole. It corrupts the social order and leads to further deception and harm. In addition, lying reveals a lack of trust in God and his character. When we lie, we are essentially saying that God is not trustworthy, which is a lie in and of itself. Furthermore, lying can lead to further deception and delusion, as seen in 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12, where people are deceived by a powerful delusion because they refused to love the truth and be saved.

God's Hatred of Lying

God hates lying because it is a direct affront to his character and nature. As the one who is truth, God cannot lie (Heb 6:18) and is delighted in those who act faithfully (Ps 119:104). Lying is an abomination to God, and those who lie are demonstrating a lack of trust in him and his character. In contrast, God delights in truth and honesty, and those who act with integrity are pleasing to him. Therefore, it is essential to understand the gravity of lying and the importance of honesty in our relationships with God and with others. By choosing to tell the truth and act with integrity, we reflect the character of God and demonstrate our trust in his word and his character.
