The Problem of Lying

Lying is a problem because it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, "I am ... the truth" (Jn 14:6), indicating that there is nothing false in him. The Comforter is called the Spirit of truth, because there is no truth in him (John 14:17). When we lie, we speak according to our own nature, for we are sinners and the father of lies (John 8:44). Satan is the one who deceives and lies, and his influence is evident in the lies we tell.

Why God Hates Lying

God hates lying because it is a form of deception that dishonors him and diminishes his glory. When we lie, we are saying that God's character is not true, and that is a lie. We are created in God's image and are called to imitate him and be truth-tellers. Lies and deception are wrong because they are against God's very nature.
