Evangelism in Christianity: A Biblical Perspective

Evangelism is a fundamental aspect of Christianity, as it involves sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others, with the aim of bringing them to a saving faith in Him. According to the New Testament, evangelism is simply preaching the gospel, the evangel (Matthew 28:19). It is a work of communication in which Christians make themselves mouthpieces for God's message of mercy to sinners (2 Corinthians 5:19-20). Evangelism is not merely a matter of teaching, instructing, or imparting information to the mind, but it includes the encouragement of sinners to accept Christ Jesus as their Savior, recognizing that in the most fundamental sense, they are under the wrath of God as a Judge.

The goals of evangelism are to bring persons to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, incorporate them into the full life of the church, and transform society to conform to God's intention (Romans 15:20-21). Evangelism is a means of grace, which involves presenting Christ Jesus to sinners as their only hope, in this world or the next. It is a call to faith and repentance, which occurs as a response to the gospel (John 3:16). Faith comes from hearing the gospel, and repentance is a response to the message of God's mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38).

In biblical evangelism, the emphasis is on the sovereignty of God in salvation, rather than human responsibility. The Bible teaches that God is the One who chooses and calls people to salvation (Romans 9:11-16). However, this does not negate human responsibility, but rather highlights the role of God's sovereignty in bringing people to faith. As Paul writes, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). This verse emphasizes the love of God for humanity and the offer of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, evangelism is not a hopeless task, but rather a joyful expression of God's love and mercy to a lost world.
