The Importance of Trusting God

Trusting God is essential because it is the means by which we come to know Him intimately. When we trust God, we acknowledge His sovereignty and power, and we recognize that He is all-sufficient to meet our needs. Trusting God leads to a deeper knowledge of God, and as a result, He directs our paths (Prov 16:9). However, our trust in God is only genuine when it has an element of assurance or confidence, which is what Jesus always asks us to do first of all. This is the way to love God, as Jesus knows that as soon as we trust Him, we shall begin to love Him.

The Paradox of Trusting God

There is a paradox in trusting God, as it means we must also acknowledge that He has suffered on account of evil. We may wonder why God does not remove evil in the world or even blame Him for it. However, trusting God leads us to a deeper knowledge of His character, and we come to understand that He is all-wise, loving, just, and holy. We see the end from the beginning, so there is no reason to doubt His goodness. Our trust in God is not blind faith, but rather it is based on the fact that we take Him at His word and believe what He has said.

The Basis of Trusting God

The best reason to commit ourselves to God in faith is Jesus, God in flesh who was sent to reveal God to us. We can trust God because we see, know, and trust Jesus. In fact, for Christians today to think of themselves as obligated to try to earn God's favor by obedience would be to cut themselves off from trusting in the merits of Christ's work. Our trust in God must be based on our knowledge of His character, heart, and motivations. As we come to know Jesus, we come to know God, and our trust in Him grows. Ultimately, trusting God is not about having a secure foundation to rest upon, but rather it is about trusting in a person, God Himself, based on the fact that we take Him at His word and believe what He has said.
