Why am I being punished for being honest?
The Bible teaches that honesty is a vital aspect of our relationship with God and others. When we lie, we are denying the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6), and there is nothing false in him. The Comforter is called the Spirit of truth (Jn 15:26). This means that honesty is not just a moral virtue, but a fundamental aspect of our relationship with God. When we lie, we are not only hurting others, but also damaging our relationship with God.
The Bible warns us that lying is a problem because it leads to more lies and more deception. Once deception creeps in, it becomes more and more natural (Prov 10:18). This is why the Bible says that liars are capable of any crime, so skilled are they at concealing their sins (Prov 10:18). Habitual lying removes any sense of moral boundaries, making it easier for us to justify other sins. When someone is comfortable with lying, no moral boundaries remain, and they are more likely to engage in other sinful behaviors. This is why the Bible says that lying is a deadly sin that spawns worse evils.
So, why are you being punished for being honest? The Bible teaches that honesty is a weightier matter of the law (Matt 5:37). When we lie, we are not only hurting others, but also damaging our relationship with God. The punishment for lying may be swift, immediate, unpleasant, and nonnegotiable, but it is also necessary to restore our relationship with God and others. By punishing lying, God is teaching us the importance of honesty and the consequences of deception. This is why the Bible says that honesty is better than death (Prov 21:3), and that the consequences of telling the truth have to be better than death. The punishment for lying may be difficult, but it is a necessary step towards restoring our relationship with God and others.
