How do we prioritize our values in times of uncertainty when we're feeling anxious?
Embracing God's Sovereignty in Uncertainty
When we're feeling anxious, it's natural to want to prioritize our values in a way that brings us peace and stability. However, the Bible teaches us that true peace comes not from trying to control our circumstances, but from trusting in God's sovereignty. As Jesus said, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6). This means that we must bring God into our decision-making process, acknowledging that He is the greatest factor in all of our planning.
In times of uncertainty, our natural inclination is to try to forecast accurately what will happen next. However, this can lead to anxiety and worry, as we try to control every outcome. But the Bible teaches us that from God's standpoint, it is absolutely unreasonable for us to be anxious. Jesus didn't say that the person who takes no thought for anything in their life is blessed, but rather that we should not be anxious about how we will live (Matthew 6:25-34). Instead, we should trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, knowing that He has ordained us to be His loved ones.
To prioritize our values in times of uncertainty, we must learn to trust in God's sovereignty and provision. This means that we must be willing to surrender our need for control and instead, trust in God's goodness and wisdom. As the Bible says, "There is no such thing as chance, or fortune; nor is there a readier way to gain the fear of God, and to put our whole trust in Him, than to be thoroughly versed in His decrees" (Proverbs 16:33). By trusting in God's sovereignty, we can experience the peace that transcends all understanding, and live a life that reflects our values in a way that honors God.
