Your Question:

what's the point of treatment if it's just a temporary fix?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with depression, and I've often been asked about the point of treatment if it's just a temporary fix. My wife Susan and I have been married for 19 years, and we've seen our children, Joshua and Rebecca, go through their own struggles with mental health. In my experience, physical treatments can alleviate some of the physical symptoms of depression, but they don't address the underlying issues.

The problem is that many people, including some in the medical community, view depression as solely a physical condition. But as a Christian, I believe that we are spiritual beings, and that our hope in God is what revises our experience of depression. When we recognize our spiritual core, we find that there are places where we can find hope and healing that go beyond physical treatments. In fact, I believe that biblical help, encouragement, and direction can be even more helpful than secular non-medical assistance.

The key to true healing is not just physical treatment, but a deeper understanding of our spiritual nature. As the Scripture says, "For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds, says the Lord" (Jeremiah 30:17). When we put our hope in God, we can find true healing and restoration, not just temporary fixes. This is what I've seen in my own life and in the lives of those I've ministered to. It's not just about alleviating symptoms, but about finding true healing and wholeness.
