Biblical Answer

As a pastor and a follower of God, I've encountered many questions about the nature of pain and suffering. One of the most difficult questions is, "Why does God allow pain when I'm already suffering?" I believe that God doesn't punish us for our sins, but rather, our suffering can be a result of living in a sinful and fallen world. It's also possible that suffering can be a reminder of our human brokenness and alienation from God, prompting us to seek outside assistance and turn to Him in repentance and faith.

In some cases, suffering can serve as a wake-up call, making us realize our need for God's help and guidance. This is not to say that God takes delight in our pain, but rather, He desires to use our experiences to bring us closer to Him and to reveal His character. As the Bible says, "For this cause have I raised you up, for to show in you my power and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth" (Exodus 9:16). God's purpose in allowing pain and suffering is not always to bring us personal growth or improvement, but rather, to bring glory to Himself and to make Him visible to us.

I've come to understand that God's reasons for allowing pain and suffering are often beyond our comprehension. However, we can trust that His goodness and love are always at work, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. As the theologian Vernon Grounds said, "An individual, quite completely free from tension, anxiety, and conflict may be deceived about himself and God." Suffering can be a reminder of our limitations and our need for God's guidance, and it's in these moments that we can turn to Him in trust and faith, seeking to understand His purposes and plans for our lives.
