The Burden of Debt

Debt can be a heavy burden, causing emotional distress, anxiety, and stress. It can also create a sense of obligation, leading to feelings of resentment and bitterness. The Bible teaches us to render all due obedience to civil authorities and to keep alert in spirit, especially in ominous times (Romans 13:1-2). However, when it comes to personal debt, we must not accept the lie that we haven't really forgiven. We must focus on the truth that our debt has been canceled through Christ's satisfaction of justice (Matthew 26:28).

The Freedom of Forgiveness

Trying to forget a debt is not the same as canceling it. To truly forgive, we must make a conscious decision to cancel the debt. This involves making a list of the people who have mistreated or taken advantage of us and declaring, "You don't owe me anymore." We must also confront our own greed and acknowledge that we are not entitled to payment or compensation for past hurts. As Jesus said, "Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions" (Luke 12:15). We must learn to live free of burdensome debt and focus on the truth that our debts have been canceled.

Forgiveness is not just about canceling debt, but also about canceling the emotional burden that comes with it. When we forgive, we are not condoning or excusing the wrongdoing, but rather releasing the debt and the emotions associated with it.
