Biblical Answer

In this world, marriage is a beautiful reflection of the love and commitment that exists between Christ and His church. However, when we consider the possibility of marriage in heaven, we are faced with a paradox. On one hand, Jesus says that there will be a great wedding celebration in heaven, where Christ will be united with the church (Matthew 22:30). This suggests that marriage will continue in some form in the afterlife. On the other hand, Jesus also says that in the resurrection, there will be no marrying or giving in marriage (Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25; Luke 20:35). This statement seems to imply that marriage as we know it will cease to exist in heaven.

The Bible teaches that the unfallen angels in heaven neither marry nor are given in marriage (Matthew 22:30). This suggests that marriage, as we understand it, is a temporal institution that will not be necessary in the afterlife. In fact, the Scriptures nowhere teach that angels have sexual intimacy in heaven. This implies that the purpose of marriage in this life is not just to express love and intimacy, but to fulfill a deeper spiritual purpose. In the heavenly places, there is a more glorious reality, the marriage of Christ and the church, which is the ultimate fulfillment of our spiritual calling (Ephesians 5:25-29).

In light of this understanding, it is possible that the concept of marriage in heaven will be transformed in a way that we cannot fully comprehend. Perhaps the relationship between Christ and the church will be the ultimate expression of marriage, and we will be united with Him in a way that transcends our current understanding of marriage. Whatever the case may be, it is clear that our focus should not be on preserving marriage in this life, but on cultivating a deep relationship with Christ that will outlast our earthly marriage. As Paul says, our ultimate joy and satisfaction should not be derived from our marital relationship, but from our relationship with Christ (1 Corinthians 7:29-31).
