Sex as a Gift from God

Sex is a gift from God, created to unite husband and wife in a profound way, enabling them to produce something valuable (1:28). God did not create sex for no reason, leaving us to make up anything we like. He made sex to fulfill something basic in human nature, satisfying truly and profoundly, but not in the final and perfect sense that comes only from knowing God himself (1:31). Sex is a good part of God's creation, included when God looked over everything that he had made and declared it was very good (Gen. 1:31).

God's Rules for Sex

When it comes to sexual behavior, we need to get more specific. What exactly should we do, or not do, to keep sex holy? Careful examination of scripture reveals there is structure in God's rules for sex. Good sex is not God, but God defines good sex. Good sex never defines God. The Bible never allows using sex in worship either as a way to reach God or as a method to experience God. Instead, sex is a way to express love and commitment to one's spouse, and it is only when we prioritize God's authority and rules that sex can be truly fulfilling and rewarding.

The Purpose of Sex

Sex is included in God's promise that those who obey him will receive it when a relationship pleases God and follows his rules, and you lose it when a relationship goes out of bounds. You can get sexual pleasure without obeying God's rules, but you can never know joy in a sexual relationship that is not holy. God gave sex extra power because he was making it easier for us to agree that we cannot live holy lives without depending on him completely. By expecting sex to satisfy everything completely all by itself, therapeutic paganism leads us to worship sex as God, rather than prioritizing our relationship with God. By sanctifying sex as God intended it, within the confines of marriage, we can view sex as a positive reflection of our desire and passion for God.
