How does lying affect my relationship with God?
The Destructive Nature of Lying
Lying is a problem that affects our relationship with God in several ways. Firstly, it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6)there is nothing false in him. The Comforter is called the Spirit of truth (Jn 15:26; 16:13). Therefore, when we lie, we contradict the very nature of God. Secondly, lying destroys oneself, ones relationships, and ones connection to God. One of the surest ways to destroy character is to engage in deception. Other sins and sinful patterns can more readily be addressed than deception. Lying can also create a web of deceit that is difficult to escape, making it hard to trust others and ultimately, God.
The Root of Lying
The root of lying often lies in our unbelief and lies we harbor in our heart about God. When we doubt God's goodness or character, we are more likely to lie. This is because we feel that God is not really good; he is holding out on us. These doubts and conflicting beliefs hide in our hearts undercover, only apparent when we notice what we actually do rather than what we say. The Bible warns us that a false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will not escape (Proverbs 19:5). Therefore, it is essential to examine our beliefs about God and confront any lies or doubts that may be hindering our relationship with Him.
The Consequences of Lying
When we lie, we dishonor God and diminish his glory. We, as those created in God's image and created for the purpose of glorifying Him, should reflect His character of truth. Lying breaks a relationship, and it can create a cycle of deception that is difficult to escape. It also destroys ourselves, our relationships, and our connection to God. The Bible promises that God will not go back on His word, and He is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19; 1 Samuel 15:29). Therefore, it is essential to trust in God's promises and character, rather than our own lies and deceptions. By acknowledging and confronting our lies, we can begin to rebuild our relationship with God and live a life that reflects His truth and character.
