Your Question:
What's the right thing to do when faced with bankruptcy?
Answer:
As a pastor and a father, I believe it's essential to approach bankruptcy with integrity. When faced with bankruptcy, it's crucial to distinguish between the two types - the fraudulent version, which is immoral, and the one that's a result of calamities or desperate measures taken to save a loved one. In the latter case, filing for bankruptcy can be a reasonable step, and sometimes, a payment plan can be negotiated or the debt can be drastically reduced. In my opinion, the moral person will not use bankruptcy as a means of avoiding personal responsibility. Instead, they will take the initiative to make a decision and act on it, even if it means facing the crisis head-on. This requires forming the habit of carefully listening to God and heeding His guidance. When a crisis comes, instinctively turning to God will help you know that the habit has been formed. In our household, my wife Susan and I have always emphasized the importance of financial responsibility. We've taught our children, Joshua and Rebecca, about budgeting, staying out of debilitating debt, and paying bills on time. As a parent, I want to encourage our children to make conscious choices about their finances and to avoid getting into financial trouble. By doing so, they'll be better equipped to handle any financial crisis that may arise in the future.
