Balancing Loyalty to Country with Loyalty to Faith

When considering how to balance loyalty to country with loyalty to faith, we must understand that loyalty to Christ entails loyalty to one another as God's family, above all ethnic, cultural, and earthly kinship connections. This loyalty is central enough that Paul repeatedly emphasizes it as a necessary corollary of the gospel. In other words, our loyalty to Christ demands that we prioritize our relationships with fellow believers over our national or cultural affiliations.

This is not to say that loyalty to country is inherently wrong or that we should reject our national identity. However, when we prioritize our loyalty to the state above our loyalty to Christ, we risk compromising our values and principles. The church holds out a vision of a more cohesive society, built around a common primary loyalty to God, rather than a radical integration and reduction of all allegiances to one national loyalty. This means that as Christians, we must be intentional about living out our faith boldly and in love with God, even when it is unpopular, and modeling for others what it means to live a life of faith.

Ultimately, our loyalty to Christ should be a reasonable faith, one that recognizes the inevitable and rationally necessary presence of trust and commitment. This means that we must trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, even when we don't understand the circumstances, and commit ourselves to following Him, even when it's difficult. By doing so, we demonstrate our faith and loyalty to God, and we are justified by means of our faith, not by our own merit or works. This understanding of faith should guide our relationships with our country and its people, and help us navigate the complexities of balancing loyalty to country with loyalty to faith.
