The Biblical Mandate for Helping the Poor

Jesus taught us that helping the poor is a fundamental aspect of His kingdom. He quoted Isaiah 61:1-2, indicating that He had come to preach good news to the poor (Luke 4:18, 21). This emphasis on caring for the poor was at the core of His ministry. Jesus reminded the crowd that God's generosity went far beyond human ideas of fairness, and that in God's kingdom, no person receives less than they deserve (Luke 6:6-11). He taught that acts of devotion and acts of compassion for the poor are not mutually exclusive, and that we are to be open-handed towards our fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in our land (Luke 6:6-11).
