Why can't I just be left alone?
The Deception of Loneliness
The idea that we can just be left alone is a deceptive one. Loneliness is lethal, and our single-portion society teaches us to prioritize choice over commitment. We resist being tied down because we fear missing out, and in doing so, we miss out on the things that matter most. This is a recipe for isolation and darkness. When we withdraw from people who care for us, we are making a choice that can lead to devastating consequences.
The Call to Community
The Bible reminds us that we are not meant to be alone. Jesus says, "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:20). When we follow Jesus, we are not left to face the challenges of life alone. Instead, we are strengthened and changed by our relationships with others. This is not to say that we will never experience loneliness or feelings of isolation. However, when we humbly accept our purpose and commit to following Jesus, we can find comfort and support in the body of Christ.
The Alternative to Loneliness
The alternative to loneliness is not to be alone, but to be part of a community that is committed to following Jesus. This is a community that is not perfect, but one that is filled with people who are striving to live out their faith in a real and authentic way. When we are part of this community, we can find the support and encouragement we need to face the challenges of life. We can also find the opportunity to serve others and to be served, which is a key part of the Christian life. As the Bible says, "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25). When we choose to be part of a community that is committed to following Jesus, we can find the support and encouragement we need to live a life that is filled with purpose and meaning.
