Your Question:

What's the meaning of suffering?

Answer:

As I reflect on the meaning of suffering, I'm reminded of the Christian perspective that suffering is not the wrecking ball that knocks Christianity down, but rather the cornerstone on which it's built. Suffering has a purpose, and that's to change us so that we look more and more like Jesus himself. It's a refining process that helps us develop the qualities of mourning, understanding, patience, love, openness, and vulnerability.

In this sense, suffering is not just about the pain or injustice itself, but about the apparent God-forsakenness of it. It's the feeling that God is distant or indifferent, which can be the most unbearable part of suffering. But, as the Bible says, "God really is in the business of teaching us through suffering" (Ps. 94:12). This is what I've come to learn through my own experiences and through the stories of others who have walked through their own struggles.

As a pastor, I've seen how suffering can bring people to a deeper understanding of God's love and care. It's not that suffering teaches us directly, but that it can be used to set us free if we learn to float in sorrow rather than thrash about like a drowning emotional victim. Suffering can be a catalyst for growth, and it's through the darkness that we can find the light of God's presence and guidance.
