The Position of the Bible on Divorce and Remarriage

The Bible presents a clear view on divorce and remarriage. Jesus taught that divorce is forbidden, and remarriage after divorce is not allowed (Matthew 19:3-12, Mark 10:2-12, Luke 16:18). This teaching is based on the original creation of marriage by God, where a man and a woman become one flesh (Genesis 2:24). This union is meant to be lifelong and exclusive.

The Bible also teaches that divorce is permissible in certain circumstances. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, affirms that a Christian may accept divorce initiated by an unbelieving spouse. However, the Bible teaches that remarriage should not be taken lightly, and that believers should strive to maintain their marriages at all costs (1 Corinthians 7:39).
